From September 20th until November 1st, 2016, The Kotlas-Waterville Sister City Connection will sponsor its fourth installment of Russian film viewing and discussion, a new Russian television version of Boris Pasternak’s epic, DOKTOR ZHIVAGO, the first Russian studio production of ZHIVAGO, which was banned for many years in the Soviet Union and Russia.

The film documents the life and times of a young doctor poet, Yurii Zhivago, as he and his family live through the tumultuous last years of the Romanov Dynasty, the first revolution of 1905, the revolution of 1917, and World War I.

Just as Leo Tolstoy in WAR AND PEACE shows readers Russia before, during, and after Napoleon’s invasion of Russia (1812), so too does Pasternak use ordinary characters and ordinary families during a time of unprecedented political and social upheaval in the early 20th century to paint his picture of another societal earthquake in Russia. The last night of class will be a traditional Russian dinner. Class limit is 25 students.
