The Kotlas Connection is pleased to announce the safe arrival of Tanya Shelygina on January 4. Tanya will be in Waterville for the next four months, teaching and studying at Thomas College.

During her stay, she will be living on campus and teaching an introductory class on Russia. Her course will focus on Russian culture, with components on history, literature, education, and the city of Kotlas. She will also be a student, taking two of the college's graduate-level education courses.

A native of Kotlas, Tanya graduated in 1991 from what was then named the Teacher Training Institute in Archangel and has been teaching English in her hometown ever since, currently at the Kotlas Pedagogical Institute. She and her husband, Vanya, have two daughters, Katya and Paulina. Katya is currently studying at the Polytechnic Institute in St. Petersburg, and Paulina is still in school in Kotlas.

A longtime member of Kotlas's Waterville Committee, Tanya is no stranger to Waterville. She has come twice before, having escorted Kotlas teenagers here to participate in Russian Sampler in 2003 and 2006.

Tanya is the Thomas's second teaching fellow from Kotlas, following Pavel Koptelov, who was at the college for the Spring 2010 semester. Thomas also enrolled an exchange student from Kotlas, Yelena Fyodorova, for the 2008-2009 academic year.
