Mid-Maine Adult Community Education Film Series: Tolstoy's War and Peace: Two Film Interpretations

The Waterville Area-Kotlas Sister City Connection is pleased to announce that we will sponsor a third Russian film course in fall semester 2013, as part of the Mid-Maine Adult Education program. We welcome you to this film and discussion series about Leo Tolstoy's masterpiece novel War and Peace (1869) as two 20th century film directors interpret this literary epic. The films focus on three artistocratic Russian families, who live through the social and familial upheaval surrounding Napoleon's 1812 invasion of Russia.

We begin with Sergei Bondarchuk's monumental film (1968), which runs to 8 hours of viewing time. Bondarchuk not only directs but also plays the lead role as Pierre in his film. And then we will look at King Vidor's 1956 adaptation of the novel (nearly 4 hours long), starring Audrey Hepburn, Henry Fonda, and Mel Ferrer. Vidor's production is the first English language version of War and Peace.

The film viewings and discussions will begin on Tuesday evening, September 24, 2013, 6:00 - 8:30 p.m., at Waterville Senior High School, and will continue on Tuesday evenings until our concluding Russian dinner on November 19th.

If you are interested in registering for the course, please contact Mid-Maine Regional Adult Community Education at 873-5754 or e-mail to adulted@fc.wtvl.k12.me.us.
