Kotlas Connection Expects Visitors in March For Russian Sampler

Our eighteenth annual Russian Sampler will be held at Colby College on Monday, March 21. English teacher Inna Tushina will come from Kotlas with two students to participate in the program.

A good friend and long-time member of the Waterville Committee in Kotlas, Inna has been here twice before, in August 1993 and October 1998, both times as a private guest. We will be very happy to see her again.

Two Kotlas students are Mariya Ryabeva and Evgenia Palkhanova. Both girls have won English-speaking competitions. Many, many thanks to Marilyn Hall for volunteering to have all three guests stay at her house.

Also taking part in Sampler will be Slava Selin. From Kamchatka in Russia's Far East, Slava is an exchange student this year at Messalonskee High School. He is living with Kotlas Connection member Mark Fisher, who is making arrangments to bring over a high-school boy from Kotlas, Stepan Lystsev, in March for a few weeks as well.

Finally, let us not forget Kotlas English teacher Tanya Shelygina, who is spending the semester at Thomas College. With five Kotlasssians, this will be the most people we've ever had from our sister city for Russian Sampler.

As you know, Russian Sampler is a day of immersion in Russian history, language and culture for junior-high and high school students. We are always looking for volunteers to present programs or simply to assist the presenters. If you are interested in participating, please contact Prof. Elena Monastireva-Ansdell at eimonast@colby.edu or 859-4451.
